Chicago’s South Siders have somewhat quiet this offseason, but most notably making trades for infielders Todd Frazier, and Brett Lawrie. The White Sox however, are still far from being a playoff contender, after a weak 76-86 season, finishing 4th in the AL central. There are still many free agents out there, and some that could contribute immediately to bring future help to the struggling Sox.
Yoenis Cespedes- Outfielder
Not only did Cespedes have an amazing second half of his season but he had a career year, setting career highs with 101 runs, 184 hits, 35 home runs, 6 triples, and 42 doubles. Cespedes also only had 7 errors the entire season in the outfield. Acquiring Cespedes would be smart for the Sox, but they may not have the money to pull it off, with the burden of other big contracts on the team. The recent Gold Glove winner and former home run derby champ would bring skill and power to one of the teams that need it the most.Yoenis Cespedes may have had the best 2nd half of the season this year, after being traded from Detroit, to New York, and leading the Mets to the World Series. White Sox 1st Baseman Jose Abreu said that Cespedes “Is a good player, and person”, as Abreu is friends with Cespedes. Cespedes can play anywhere in the outfield, which would let Avisail Garcia develop more, who is clearly not ready for a starting role.
Justin Upton - Outfielder
Justin Upton would be a great fit for the Sox. The Sox would be able to keep Adam Eaton in center, and put Upton in the corner to replace Avisail Garcia, and let Garcia develop. The only problem with Upton is he says he doesn’t want a short term deal. The Sox need power however, and Upton can provide that. Upton had 136 hits, 26 home runs, 85 runs, 81 RBI’s, and 19 stolen bases last year. In the outfield, Upton only had 3 errors the whole season along with 235 putouts. He can also back it up with his 2 silver slugger awards. Upton preferably wants to play right field, but can play left if need be. Upton has never played in the AL, so if he signs with the Sox, he will get a chance at potentially even playing DH. Upton could be just the spark the Sox need to stay competitive in the talented AL Central.
