While the MLB regular season wraps up, we think ahead towards the postseason. With four games to play, the Mets, the Giants, and the Cardinals fighting for the Wild Card in the NL and the Blue Jays, Orioles,Tigers, Mariners, Astros, and Yankees all vying for postseason spots. We will now examine each conference, and predict the wild card winners.
Currently in the American League, the Blue Jays hold a 1 game lead over the Orioles for the number one wild card spot, and the Orioles hold a lead with Detroit sitting 1.0 GB, Seattle 2.0 GB, Houston 3.5 GB and New York Yankees 4.0 GB. The Yankees, after trading away Aroldis Chapman and Andrew Miller at the deadline, thanks to great play from 23 year old catcher Gary Sanchez and an improved rotation. However, the Yankees are not likely to make the playoffs as they sit 4 Games back with 4 to go. The Astros are a talented team, led by Jose Altuve and Carlos Correa. Altuve is hitting .337 this year with 24 HR and 96 RBI, proving once again that he is one of the best in the MLB. Young superstar Carlos Correa has held his own with a .276 AVG, 20 HR and 96 RBI. Unfortunately the Astros sit 3.5 GB as of writing, so I do not believe they will make the playoffs. The Mariners have been much better this year, with a resurgent Robinson Cano. However, their starting pitching has not been up to par, so I do not believe they will make the playoffs. The Tigers are the most interesting team. They are 1 Game back, led by underrated superstar JD Martinez (.313, 25 HR, 68 RBI), and if the rotation holds up (4.26 team ERA) then I believe they will make the postseason. The Orioles have been a great hitting team, but rely on power too much. Closer Zach Britton has not had a blown save the whole season thus far. I believe the Orioles will make the playoffs this year. Finally, the Blue Jays. The Blue Jays are a very strong team with an ERA of 3.79, but I believe they are very reliant on top of the lineup stars Jose Bautista and Josh Donaldson, and I believe they will be overtaken by the Tigers and the Orioles, and miss the playoffs.
Prediction: Orioles and Tigers
Currently in the National league, the Mets hold a 1.5 game lead over the Giants, and the Cardinals sit 1 game back of the Giants. The Mets are a very solid team, with Yoenis Cespedes manning the outfield and a very good rotation. The Mets team ERA this year is 3.59, and even though Steven Matz is out for the year, I believe they will make the playoffs. The Giants are very difficult to understand. Their lineup can be outstanding, but their pitching is shaky and I believe they will not make the playoffs. The Cardinals are a very good team, and you can never count them out of the postseason. The Cardinals are led by solid young shortstop Aledmys Diaz and backstop catcher Yadier Molina. I believe they are in on October.
Prediction: Mets and Cardinals
