While new bears DC Vic Fangio brings promise, that is not to say there won’t be growing pains. One of the bears’ most hyped (and a bit overpaid, in my opinion) FA signees in last offseason was Jared Allen. He brought promise, but after his first sub-5 sack season since his rookie year, it is only natural to wonder if the 33 year old veteran is just too old. Fear not, bears fans, this guy’s career is far from over.
Yes, Jared Allen had a terrible season last year. He did have his first sub-5 sack season since his rookie year. But Allen was suffering from pneumonia the whole season, which caused a lot of weight loss which many believe led to his decline in productivity. With his weight back and his strength up, Allen could be a force this season at DE.
Wait a minute, Allen won’t be playing DE in Fangio’s new system. Allen has been at defensive end all of his career in both Kansas City and Minnesota, but with the new DC’s system, a 3-4, he is just too small to play at a 3-4 defensive end spot. When the Bears told Allen he was going to bem playing 3-4 OLB he was not happy at all. Now, it seems, Jared Allen has had a change of heart as he has gone on record saying he is excited about the switch and looks forward to “revitalizing” himeself in his new role and “revamp my career”. Expect great things out of this guy.
