Cubs are going crazy in winter meetings! Castro has just been traded to the Yankees, and they have just signed Ben Zobrist to a four year $56 million deal.
Both of these moves are very big. Castro was an overpaid player that the Cubs didn’t even really need because of all the depth on the roster. Castro will now have a better role on the Yankees being the starting second baseman, while on the Cubs he was downgraded to a depth player that wasn’t even an everyday player. The Cubs in return got RHP Adam Warren and an infielder, Brendan Ryan. Warren is a good pitcher. He is only 27 years old and is able to be a starter or a reliever. Last year he posted a 7-7 record, with a 3.29 era and a 1.165 WHIP. He also appeared in 43 games, and started 17. Warren will be a great addition to the pitching roster. Ryan was a player acquired to fill a depth role. In my opinion, he will shine as a pinch hitter for the Cubs in 2016. He doesn’t have great statistics but I think he could be a player like Tommy La Stella, pinch hitting sometimes and starting when a player is either hurt or resting.
Ben Zobrist is a huge signing. He will most likely take over the second base position on the team. The one thing that I love about Zobrist is that he already has 8 years of experience with Joe Maddon. Getting a player and a manger to reunite is huge. The Chemistry is already perfect and everything is just fitting into place. Zobrist can play any position that the Cubs need him to, but most likely he will take over the second base role. He is 34 years old and produced very good numbers last year. He posted a .276 batting average, a .359 on base percentage, and a .450 slugging percentage. Zobrist also had 13 home runs and 56 runs batted in. He also only played in 126 games. Zobrist will shine with Joe Maddon back as his manager.
These two moves are huge for the Cubs. The Castro trade clears a lot of cap space and the Zobrist signing gives the Cubs a very versatile player and reunites him and Maddon. I am very excited to see the rest of the moves the Cubs will do this offseason. Get excited Cubs fans!
